The region of Asturias is one of the most beautiful areas of Spain. Dominated by the Picos de Europa mountain range the scenery is spectacular and sometimes breathtaking. As well as the mountains Asturias has one of the finest coastlines in Spain, the Costa Verde. The Costa Verde has a backdrop of cliffs sheltering sandy bays and coastal villages. Asturias is the perfect place for walking holidays, either in the mountain villages or along the Costa Verde. The area has prehistoric, Roman and Celtic monuments. Asturias is proud of being one of the few areas of Spain not to be invaded by the Moors. The recapture of Spain began in the region when a Moorish army was defeated by the Christians at Covadonga in the Pico de Europa mountains in 718AD. Outdoor pursuits including fishing, skiing and golfing are popular in the Asturias region. The unspoiled mountain villages with Swiss style chalets are far removed from the sun baked costas most people associate with Spain. This is green Spain. The capital city of Asturias is Oviedo. Asturias has borders with Galicia to the west Cantabria to the east and Castile and Leon in the south.
