The Balearics are a group of Spanish owned islands approx 150 miles off the east coast of Spain. There are four main islands in all, Majorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. Each island has its own individual characteristics. The landscape is slightly different on each island and there are cultural and climatic variations. Majorca is the largest island followed by Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The Balearic Islands have a history dating back to the earliest civilizations and pre historic remains have been found, notably in Menorca which houses some of the most important early remains in the Mediterranean. Some of the original inhabitants include the Romans, Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians and the Byzantines. Today the islands are popular Mediterranean holiday destinations. The most visited holiday island by far is Majorca. The popularity of Majorca can be gauged by the amount of visitors who return year after year. Ibiza has gained a reputation as the island for nightlife lovers while Menorca has become established as the place for families with young children. Apart from Formentera which is accessible by ferry from Ibiza, each island has its own airport.
