Extremadura
Bordering Castile & Leon to the north and Portugal to the west. Extremadura is one of the remotest regions in Spain Up until recently the road and rail infrastructure was almost non existent making the area almost inaccessible to any would be tourists. Nowadays, improvements have been made and the area is gradually opening up to visitors. The region is noted for its wide variety of wildlife and there are a few companies specialising in bird watching and angling holidays. Extremadura is home to some of the best preserved Roman remains in Spain and in its small capital Merida, there are among other things, a magnificent Roman amphitheatre, temple and Roman bridge. The remoteness of the region has left it unspoilt by mass tourism and if you want to sample the Spain of times gone by, Extremadura is probably the best example.
