Puerto de la Cruz is the most popular resort in the north of the island. The north of the island is almost tropical compared to the dry and barren landscape in the south. There are banana plantations, palm trees and a wide variety of flowers. The famous bird of paradise flower thrives here and is one of the favourites at the local flower markets.
Puerto de la Cruz has a lovely fresh feel, the Atlantic waves crash into the walls along the promenade creating a fine mist. This area seems timeless. The promenade is lined with some lovely shops, bars and restaurants. there are coffee bars like the cafe de Paris which take you back to an earlier era. Following the promenade brings you to a small picture postcard harbour which could have come straight out of a small Cornish fishing village. Puerto de la Cruz is overlooked by Mount Teide which is often capped by snow during the winter months. At the southern end of the promenade there is a sea water lido with large swimming pools. This end of the promenade is where many of the resort's hotels are located. The beaches in Puerto de la Cruz have black sand which can come as a surprise for first time visitors. One of the main tourist attractions on Tenerife is the famous Lorro Park or parrot park. This houses one of the largest collections of parrots in the world, They also have a dolphin show and a variety of other animals.
