You may not be familiar with the name Andalucia when thinking of a holiday in Spain but no doubt you will have heard of Seville. Seville is the capital of the Andalucia region which covers 17.2 per cent of Spain. Most of us associate Spain with flamenco dancing, fiestas and bull fighting, Andalucia is where these activities originated. Andalucia was the birthplace of the artists Pablo Picasso and Velasquez and a favourite haunt of Ernest Hemingway who wrote a number of books about the area. In contrast to Andalucia's magnificent cities, the landscape just outside Granada is completely different and has been used by film makers many times as a backdrop for westerns.
The area is also home to many troglodyte villages occupied by present day people living in caves burrowed out of soft rock. We can't talk about Andalucia without mentioning the Costa del Sol, one of Spain's most frequented tourist destinations and home to the popular resorts of Marbella, Puerto Banus, Fuengirola, Torremolinos, Mijas and others. Finally, the Sierra Nevada mountain range south east of Granada is the most southerly ski resort in Europe and if you go at the right time of the year, you can sunbathe on the beach in the morning and then do a bit of skiing in the afternoon.
