Pick two visible anchors
Bilbao's estuary links several recognisable parts of the city, including the Guggenheim area and the old-town setting near the Arriaga Theatre. Choose two reference points that suit your apartment's location. They can define a section of the walk without becoming a demand to cover the whole central riverfront.
Check the route on the bank you intend to use and identify the bridge, if any, where you plan to cross. A landmark visible on the opposite side is not necessarily reached most directly by continuing ahead. Knowing the crossing avoids unnecessary backtracking.
Use the walk to learn directions
Notice how streets lead away from the water towards the areas you plan to visit later. Save a useful junction or transport stop rather than recording only scenic photographs. The aim is to make future outings easier, not to complete every museum and shopping area during this first look.
Take time to pause when the view changes. If the weather makes a riverside walk less appealing, shorten it and turn inland at a suitable point. A flexible orientation outing should not require everyone to stay outside simply because a route was drawn beforehand.
Add only one indoor commitment
If a museum is part of the day, check its current ticket and entry information and place it at one end of the walk. Do not assume an exterior view gives any indication of the time needed inside. Allow a proper visit rather than treating admission as a brief detour.
Alternatively, keep the riverside outing entirely unbooked and choose a café or ordinary meal when convenient. This can be a useful approach after travel, when arrival delays or tiredness make precise plans less reliable.
Finish on the apartment side
Plan the last section towards your accommodation, with a grocery stop if needed. Buy chilled ingredients only when you are ready to go back. Once home, save the route you enjoyed and note any section you would change. A first Bilbao walk has done its job when the city becomes easier to navigate, even if several famous sights remain for another day.
