Follow the route before the façade
Girona's historic centre includes the Forca Vella and the narrow streets of the Jewish quarter, with the Onyar separating historic and newer parts of the city. This is appealing territory for an apartment stay, but photographs of medieval streets are poor evidence of how easily luggage reaches a front door.
Ask the host to describe the final approach from your arrival point. If arriving at a station, follow the walking route all the way to the building. If using a taxi, establish the legal stopping point and whether it leaves you with steps or a pedestrian stretch to negotiate.
Separate outdoor and indoor stairs
A listing may mention a lift while omitting several steps at the entrance. It may also describe an upper-floor property as easy to reach without saying how many flights are involved. Request those details explicitly and assess them for the least mobile member of the group.
The same care applies outside. Girona's cathedral is associated with a prominent staircase, but that does not mean every old-town address has the same approach. Compare actual routes rather than ruling the whole area in or out. Where step-free access is necessary, get measurements and a confirmed route before booking.
Avoid paying for the wrong convenience
If your stay includes repeated departures from the city, investigate the journey back to the relevant transport point. A charming position for evening walks may be less convenient with luggage or an early start. Conversely, if most days are within the centre, an apartment closer to your walking interests may reduce unnecessary transfers.
Check food shopping on the same map. Choose a manageable first shop after arrival, then decide whether the kitchen supports more ambitious meals. A table with enough seats and a clear preparation surface can be more valuable than extra appliances squeezed into a narrow corner.
Make the first evening simple
Save the entrance photograph, check-in instructions and host contact details before travelling. Agree what happens if transport is delayed, particularly where key collection takes place somewhere else. Do not schedule a complicated first-night meal around an arrival time that depends on several connections.
Once settled, use a short walk around the river as orientation rather than attempting every historic highlight immediately. Identify the return route in daylight and note a useful shop. Girona rewards time outside, but the accommodation works best when those first practical tasks are settled and nobody is still carrying bags through unfamiliar lanes.
