Girona: plan a gentle first look around the old town

Begin Girona with the Onyar and a small part of the old town, leaving stairs and longer historic walks for a deliberate decision.

Start with the river view

The Onyar separates Girona's historic centre from newer parts of the city and offers a clear reference for a first outing. Pont de Pedra is one possible anchor for looking towards the coloured riverside façades. Choose the approach that fits your apartment rather than crossing town just to begin at a prescribed spot.

Keep this first walk light, particularly after travel. Carry water and what you need for the weather, leaving luggage and unnecessary shopping at the apartment. The purpose is to understand the surroundings and find a comfortable rhythm, not to finish the city's entire historic itinerary immediately.

Choose one old-town section

From the river, select a small area of streets to explore, with the cathedral or Jewish quarter as a reference. Check the actual route and be prepared for changes of level. The cathedral's well-known stairs need not become part of every walk simply because they appear in photographs.

If someone needs a step-free outing, investigate the suitable approach in advance instead of improvising after reaching a staircase. Agree that shortening the route is acceptable. A gentle first look is successful when everyone finishes comfortably, even if an interesting lane remains unexplored.

Make one useful discovery

Find a shop that can supply breakfast or a missing kitchen item, and note how to reach it from the apartment. Save the location for another day if you are not ready to return. Avoid buying chilled ingredients and then continuing on a long historic walk.

You might also identify a place for a later meal, but do not assume its current opening arrangements from the fact that the frontage looks inviting. Check before organising the evening around it, especially if the group needs a particular dietary option or seating arrangement.

Go back while the route is familiar

Return along a route you understand and notice the apartment entrance in daylight. Share the location with everyone in the party. Once settled back inside, decide whether to add another outing or leave the rest of Girona for the following morning. A short orientation walk removes uncertainty without using all the energy available for the stay.
