Learn the kitchen before filling it
Spend the first day checking cupboard space, fridge shelves, pans and the cooking appliances. Plan a few ordinary meals using that setup. A larger pack is only useful if you have room to store it and will finish it during the booking. Avoid buying ingredients for an oven meal before confirming the oven works and the necessary dish is supplied. Start with the supplies you know you will use, then add more specialised ingredients once your actual cooking routine becomes clear.
Build a repeatable shopping route
Find a practical everyday shop and check its current opening hours. A market visit can be enjoyable, but it need not replace the simplest place to buy routine household items. Consider carrying capacity, the walk home and where chilled purchases fit into the day's route. Buying a few days of food at a time may suit a small fridge better than a weekly shop. Keep a shared list if several people shop, and check what remains before adding another packet of the same staple.
Choose ingredients with more than one use
Plan meals that share a few components without making every dinner identical. Vegetables bought for a pasta dish may also suit a lunch, while bread can fit several breakfasts. Adapt this idea to your own dietary requirements and the products available. Read labels and storage instructions directly, and do not treat unfamiliar packaging as equivalent to a familiar product. Keep personal preferences visible when sharing the flat so that one person's idea of a useful staple does not become everyone else's unwanted surplus.
Reduce the shop as departure approaches
At the start of the final week, count the meals you will actually eat in the apartment. Use that number to guide fresh purchases and avoid replacing every nearly empty household product with a large container. Ask the host whether any unopened items can be left; do not assume they want them. A month's shopping should gradually contract towards the end of the stay. The aim is a kitchen that supports daily life without turning the final evening into an exercise in disposing of accumulated supplies.
