Check balcony and window arrangements for a family stay

Balcony and window details deserve specific questions before a family booking, followed by a careful check on arrival.

Ask for the openings, not the view

A photograph taken towards the sea rarely shows the balcony door handle, window restrictors or nearby furniture. Ask the host for clear pictures of these details and explain the ages of the children travelling. Find out which rooms open onto outdoor space and how access is controlled. A ground-floor description does not establish that every external area is level or free from drops. Likewise, a terrace can sit above another part of the building. Establish what the particular property contains rather than drawing conclusions from the label.

Look at the room as a child might

RoSPA advises keeping climbable furniture away from windows and using appropriate window restrictors. Include the position of beds, chairs and low tables in your review. On arrival, inspect the actual arrangement before settling children into a room. If something differs materially from what was agreed, contact the host promptly and request a suitable resolution. Do not improvise a fix to a railing, lock or restrictor, or assume that an insect screen provides protection against a fall. A photograph cannot certify a feature's strength or condition.

Make access an adult responsibility

ABTA recommends supervising children around balconies and keeping furniture away from the railings. Decide which adult is responsible when an outdoor area is in use; being within earshot elsewhere in the apartment is not the same as watching. Keep the arrangement simple enough to follow during ordinary moments such as unloading groceries or preparing breakfast. Doors that are opened repeatedly for ventilation or drying clothes deserve particular attention because the plan must work throughout the stay, not only at bedtime.

Choose a layout you can manage

An impressive balcony is optional. If you cannot establish how the space is accessed, or the family would have to maintain an impractical routine to use the apartment, choose another property. A smaller outdoor area or no balcony at all may fit your holiday better. These checks help identify questions and mismatches; they do not make a remote assessment a safety inspection. Use the property's actual condition and authoritative safety guidance when deciding whether an arrangement is suitable.
