Establish the available capacity
Look for a photograph with the fridge door open or ask whether the appliance is full height, under-counter or a small countertop model. External dimensions alone can be misleading because a freezer compartment, drinks rack or unusually shallow shelf reduces useful storage. If you need a freezer, confirm that one exists and ask about its size.
Make a provisional plan for the first evening and breakfast rather than ordering a week's groceries before seeing the kitchen. A small initial shop lets you check the appliance, find the nearest practical food shop and understand how much space remains after essentials are unpacked.
Choose meals that share ingredients
For a short stay, overlapping ingredients reduce the number of opened containers competing for space. Tomatoes, bread and eggs might appear in several meals, while buying a different sauce and garnish for every dinner creates more storage pressure. Plan around what your group likes, then adjust quantities to the space and the number of meals eaten at home.
Separate items that need chilled storage from those that can be stored elsewhere according to their labels. Do not force a large shop into the appliance by blocking circulation or leaving food out that requires refrigeration. Follow food labels and the appliance instructions; if the fridge is not working correctly, contact the host rather than treating extra shopping trips as a substitute for repair.
Make shopping manageable
Compare the route to a food shop with your likely return from sightseeing. Carrying small bags on the way home may be convenient; making a dedicated journey with tired children each evening may not be. Check shop opening information for your actual arrival day instead of assuming the nearest location will be open when you reach the apartment.
Keep the final shop modest. A two-night supply bought near departure can leave more waste than useful choice. Share the fridge plan with other adults so nobody independently buys a second large bottle or another pack of breakfast ingredients. The aim is to give everyone enough food and flexibility without turning every shelf into a packing puzzle.
