Choose a breakfast before choosing supplies
Decide whether mornings call for toast, cereal, fruit or something cooked. A family that wants to leave quickly needs a different plan from one that enjoys a slow breakfast together. Check that the kitchen has the relevant equipment, including enough bowls, mugs and spoons. A kettle and a coffee machine do not tell you whether toast is possible. Keep the first menu simple enough to prepare without several pans or unfamiliar controls, especially if people wake at different times.
Arrange a small breakfast station
After inspecting the cupboards, place the foods and utensils you will use together in one accessible area. Avoid filling the worktop with every packet bought for the week. Set aside a space where bowls can be assembled without competing with the washing-up rack. If a dining table also serves as a sleeping area, agree when it will become available each morning. A breakfast station can be as modest as one shelf and a tray; it should make clearing away easier rather than introduce another object to carry.
Shop for the actual fridge
Buy a short supply of chilled items until you know the fridge capacity and how much space other meals require. Large packs can appear economical while leaving no room for lunch ingredients. Choose quantities the family will use before departure, and check product labels for your own dietary requirements. Do not rely on opened food left by earlier guests. A first breakfast that uses only confirmed supplies is less stressful than discovering that the milk or bread you expected is not included in the booking.
Give the morning a finish
Agree a simple order: eat, put food away, clear dishes and pack the day bag. When one person prepares breakfast, someone else can deal with the table or rubbish. Keep a portable alternative for the morning of an early excursion or departure. You do not need to reproduce every detail of breakfast at home; the useful routine is one that leaves the kitchen ready for later and gets the family out at a pace that suits the holiday.
