Check pool access as well as pool photographs

Pool photographs show the water; a family booking also needs to establish how the pool is reached, controlled and supervised.

Follow the route from the apartment

Ask whether the pool belongs to the building, a neighbouring complex or a separately operated facility. Establish the exact route, including roads, lifts and gates. A pool visible from a balcony may not be included in your booking. Confirm opening dates, daily hours and any access pass or charge for your travel dates. If the pool is central to the holiday, obtain these answers before making a commitment rather than assuming the amenity symbol covers every practical detail.

A morning swimming routine also has a packing and access side. Decide where the apartment keys, shoes and towels will be while the family uses the pool, and how everyone returns if one child needs a toilet or an early finish. If adults split up, make sure active supervision remains assigned rather than leaving the remaining group in an ambiguous handover. These ordinary transitions deserve planning because they happen repeatedly during a stay.

Ask about the boundary

Request clear information about barriers and gates, especially if doors or terraces lead towards the pool area. RoSPA recommends a complete child-resistant barrier with a self-locking gate around a pool. Do not interpret a photograph of a hedge or a low wall as evidence of such protection. Find out whether other entrances exist and whether guests regularly pass through them. On arrival, check the actual arrangement and raise discrepancies immediately. A pool enclosure does not remove the need to supervise children.

Keep the amenity's operating arrangements distinct from the property's photographs. A listing may retain a pool picture throughout the year even though access varies. Ask about your exact dates and save the reply. If pool availability is essential to your decision, read what the booking terms say about facility changes and choose a property whose arrangement you understand. Avoid interpreting a pleasant photograph as confirmation of opening hours, staffing or access rights.

Make supervision explicit

Agree which adult is actively watching the children whenever they are in or around the water, including during conversations and changes between swimming and meals. RoSPA emphasises supervision even for children who can swim, and warns that inflatables are not a replacement for it. Ask about lifeguard provision but do not treat the presence of a lifeguard as a transfer of your responsibility. If adults take turns, make the handover clear rather than assuming someone else has noticed you leaving.

Compare the pool with the rest of the stay

Check changing arrangements, toilets, seating and where wet items will go back at the apartment. A pool several lifts and corridors away may make short visits less convenient than expected. Read the current rules on food, equipment and use by visitors. Consider whether the apartment still suits your family if the pool is temporarily unavailable. Choosing on the strength of one amenity can obscure sleeping or access problems that affect every day of the holiday.
