Establish the fixed times
Confirm the checkout deadline and the time you need to leave for the airport using your actual travel arrangements. The interval between those points is your available day, not the time until the flight departs. Ask whether paid or complimentary late checkout is possible, when it can be confirmed and what happens if it is unavailable. Do not build the entire day around an informal suggestion that the apartment will probably be free. Keep the standard checkout plan workable until an extension is explicitly agreed.
For example, a family checking out at ten and leaving for the airport at four has six hours to manage, but not six hours of sightseeing. Bag handover, lunch, retrieving luggage and reaching the transfer point all consume part of that time. A nearby lunch and short walk may fit better than an attraction across the city. Build the plan backwards from the confirmed pickup rather than forwards from everything you would still like to see.
Resolve luggage before choosing an outing
Ask whether the host can store bags, where they will be kept and when you can collect them. Access to a building does not necessarily include access to the apartment or its bathroom after checkout. If using a separate luggage service, check current opening hours, bag restrictions and the route to your onward transport. Retain documents, necessary personal items and the day's clothing separately. Avoid a plan that sends the family across town twice solely to retrieve suitcases.
Check what the luggage arrangement actually includes. Storage in an office with limited hours differs from a locked facility that permits collection throughout the day. If the host offers to keep bags, establish the meeting place and a contact method in case timings change. Keep enough flexibility that a slightly delayed collection does not jeopardise the onward journey, and avoid leaving essential documents inside a bag you cannot access freely.
Pick a low-effort final activity
Choose something close to the luggage or transfer route, with a realistic food and toilet stop. A final beach visit sounds appealing but needs somewhere to change and deal with wet clothes. A major ticketed attraction may leave little flexibility if the morning packing runs late. Keep the final day less ambitious than a normal holiday day, particularly when the evening still contains a flight and the journey home. Check the chosen venue's details directly rather than assuming it welcomes luggage or allows easy re-entry.
Finish the apartment properly
Follow the checkout instructions and leave time for a final sweep of drawers, sockets and the bathroom. Keep the key-return method clear, especially if one key opens the luggage area or building exit. Take food and rubbish arrangements into account before making a final grocery purchase. Once the apartment is handed back, treat it as unavailable unless another arrangement has been confirmed. That simple boundary keeps the rest of departure day from depending on access you no longer have.
