Pack around one complete cycle

Choose a likely washing day and allow time for the clothes to dry before they are needed again. If you arrive on Saturday, planning to wash on Tuesday does not mean packing only three outfits; travel delays, spills and drying time still need a margin. Concentrate on washable everyday clothes and check the care labels before assuming everything can go in one load. Keep an arrival outfit and a final travel outfit available independently of the washing plan. This is especially useful when a short trip leaves little room to recover from a missed laundry slot.

Try laying out the clothes you would pack with and without laundry. If a single wash removes only a small extra bag, the saving may not justify a fixed household task during a brief trip. If it removes several bulky changes for children, it may be valuable. Keep the comparison practical: count the items you expect to reuse, check their care requirements and consider whether they can dry together. Shoes, thick towels and delicate clothing may not fit the same plan.

Verify the entire setup

Ask whether the washing machine is inside the flat, shared with other guests or located elsewhere. Confirm whether detergent is supplied and where clothes can be dried. A washer without a drying rack is only half a solution. If the listing mentions a tumble dryer, check whether it is a separate appliance or a washer-dryer and obtain the instructions. Shared facilities may require payment or advance planning, so establish the arrangement before deciding how much clothing to leave at home.

For a shared machine, ask how availability is managed. A nominal laundry day is not reliable if several apartments use one appliance without a booking arrangement. Keep a second possible window rather than making the washing slot compete with a non-refundable excursion. This is a reason to build flexibility into packing, not to fill the suitcase with every possible spare.

Make the wash fit the day

Choose a day with a natural apartment break rather than interrupting a long excursion simply to move laundry. Sort the clothes first, use the machine according to its instructions and leave enough rack space for air to circulate. Follow the host's rules about outdoor drying and the building's quiet hours. Do not hang items where they obstruct a walkway or could fall from the property. A smaller load that dries reliably is more useful than washing every item at once and running out of somewhere to put it.

Keep a modest backup

Identify a nearby laundry option only if you would realistically use it; check its current services and opening hours. If the apartment machine fails, ask the host what alternative they can arrange rather than experimenting with repairs. The aim is less baggage, not a trip organised around washing. If the available setup would consume half a holiday day, taking a few more lightweight clothes may be the simpler choice.
